Professor Andrew Blakers and Professor Ricardo Rüther (UFSC) have published an article in PV Magazine highlighting the incredible growth rates of solar and wind, which mean that total electricity generated from these two technologies globally have now surpassed that of nuclear plus hydropower combined.
This has occurred even with the relatively lower capacity factors of solar and wind.
The current growth rate of solar PV is 22% each year, which is equivalent to a doubling each three years. If continued, this growth rate would mean 100,000 TWh generated by solar PV in 2042. This amount of electricity would be enough to decarbonise the entire global economy.
